Warning! The Effects of Chlorine on Your Skin
The human body’s largest organ is, of course, skin. The skin,
along with the bone structure, frames the body, and, just as importantly, protects the more vulnerable internal
organs from damage due to external forces such as trauma and contaminants, including bacteria, UV rays, chemicals,
etc.
Though the body, especially the skin, is almost constantly
subject to this traumatic assault and contamination, most of us are aware of these attacks, and we try to minimize
the effects as much as possible.
For example, wearing gloves and respirators when working with
various chemicals is one form of protection. Slathering our skin with sun tan lotion when sunbathing is another.
Shielding ourselves from cuts and abrasions is yet another form of protection to prevent trauma and bacteria from
entering the body.
Yet, how many of us realize that the steamy shower that we all
enjoy in the morning when we get up, or at night after a long, hard, sweaty day is mounting an insidious attack on
our skin?
Your shower water is slowly poisoning you and your
family!
Almost all municipalities today use chlorine to disinfect
their fresh water. This is in an effort to protect us from, among other things, the effects of treated sewage water
that is constantly recycled back into our water supply.
The effectiveness of chlorine as a disinfectant is a direct
result of the fact that chlorine is a poison that kills bacteria. Though the levels of chlorine added to our tap
water are carefully measured, its very presence in our water presents a problem when we shower. That hot shower
turns the chlorine in the water into a gaseous vapor that assaults our skin, as well as our respiratory system,
kidneys, and various other organs in our bodies.
Efforts are under way to replace the free-chlorine in our
water with UV treatments, and the use of chloramine, which is a mix of free-chlorine and ammonia. None of these
alternatives to chlorine, however, are cost effective as yet, thus we’re left to deal with the chlorine problem for
some time yet to come.
Why is chlorine so harmful in your shower?
The chlorine in our shower water condenses much quicker than
water does. When we luxuriate in that relaxing, steamy shower, we are being inundated with chlorine gas. In the
case of our skin, that steamy water is opening our pores and allowing the vaporized chlorine, now in a much more
concentrated form, to enter our bodies through the open pores, and do its damage.
Damage to the skin includes:
- patchy dryness,
- itchiness,
- acne,
- irritation,
- and an imbalance of natural, healthy bacteria on the
skin.
Because chlorine is proven to cause damage to body cells, more
serious, long-term problems could also result. Such long term effects might include asthmatic symptoms, kidney
damage, and, because chlorine is a known carcinogen, the possibility of cancer.
Another fact regarding the chlorine in our shower water is
that this chemical actually causes our skin to age prematurely. Chlorine can cause wrinkles, and dry, blotchy skin
that is not only unattractive and uncomfortable, but unhealthy, as well. Certain areas of the skin are more
affected than others, with the face, genital area, back, and abdomen among the most adversely
affected.
How do you protect your skin from the harmful effects of chlorine?
Fortunately, there are products
available that will mitigate, and even
eliminate the free- chlorine elements that plague our shower stalls and bathtubs. One of the most effective is a
Vitamin C shower head. The advantages to this recently-introduced system are, essentially
three-fold:
Vitamin C shower filters have been proven as the most
effective method of removing harmful chlorine from the shower water before it leaves the shower head.
Vitamin C is acidic; therefore bacteria, algae, and bacteria are prevented from
growing.
Anti-oxidants found in Vitamin C will actually restore and revitalize the skin almost
immediately, leaving the skin more vibrant, and reversing the damage caused by years of exposure to chlorinated
water.

Though there are other types of shower filters available, such as carbon filters, and Kinetic Degradation Fluxion (KDF) filters, none has
been proven as effective or as beneficial to both the body and the environment as a Vitamin C shower filter. Since refusing to ever shower again would be a somewhat unclean solution to the problem of
chlorinated water, the use of a Vitamin C shower filter makes the most sense.
